Do I have to choose a political party?

No, choosing a political party on your Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) is always optional. However, some states require voters to indicate their political party in order to vote in primary elections.   This is true when there are different ballots for each party for the primary election.

When you fill out the form on VoteFromAbroad, it will indicate if your state has this restriction or not. If you vote in one of those states and you decide not to choose a political party, you will still receive a ballot for general elections.   If you do choose a political party, that does not mean you can only vote for candidates of that party for the general elections.
